Game drives · south from KaseseHalf day to 3 days

Uganda's most-visited park sits on Kasese's doorstep: the Kasenyi plains at first light, the crater road, and the fig country of Ishasha where the lions take to the trees.

The park gate is under an hour from town, which means a game drive can start before dawn without anybody sleeping in a vehicle. The Kasenyi plains hold the highest concentration of Uganda kob in the country, and where the kob are, the lions follow.

North of the channel the crater road climbs through a field of explosion craters with the Rwenzori on one side and Lake George on the other — the best half hour of driving in western Uganda, and most itineraries skip it.

Further south, the Ishasha sector is the one place in the region where lions habitually rest in fig trees. It is a longer drive and it is never guaranteed; we'll tell you honestly whether the day is worth it before you commit to it.
