A working salt lake mined by hand for six centuries, ringed by explosion craters. The kind of stop that ends up meaning more than the animals.
Salt has been cut from Lake Katwe since the 1400s, and it is still worked the same way — by hand, in pans staked out across the lake bed, by people who will show you the work themselves.
It is guided by the community, the money stays in it, and it gives the week a shape that a run of game drives doesn't. Pair it with the crater lakes above the escarpment and it fills a half day comfortably.
