Snow-covered Alexandra and Margherita peaks among cloud
All trips

Trekking · multi-day3–9 days

The Mountains of the Moon rise straight out of Kasese district to snow and glacier at Margherita Peak — 5,109 m, and the third-highest point in Africa.

The Rwenzori are not a walk-up. They are wet, steep and slow, through bog and giant heather and moss forest that looks like nowhere else on earth. That is also exactly why people come.

Shorter treks reach the lower valleys and the heather zone in three to four days. The full traverse to Margherita takes seven to nine and requires basic glacier travel near the summit, with guides and equipment arranged through the park.

We plan the trek around your fitness honestly. Turning back at the right altitude is a good outcome; being talked into a summit you weren't ready for is not.
